Take your Shield travelling

Your Shield Vault can carry its own Wi-Fi network anywhere. Set it up once at home, pack it, and at your holiday place your family’s phones join your Wi-Fi — with the same protection as at home.

What you’ll need
  • Your Shield Vault, its power supply, and one network cable
  • A place to stay whose router or wall socket has a spare network (LAN) port
  • The family’s phones and laptops with you at home, once, before the trip
or follow the steps below at your own pace

Honest heads-up: hotel internet that needs a login page in the browser (a “captive portal”) won’t work through a cable. This guide suits stays with a plain router or an Ethernet socket — holiday homes, family visits, rentals.

At home — before you go

1 Turn your Shield’s Wi-Fi on

Open your Shield’s Wi-Fi page (the Wi-Fi tab at the top) and, under Wi-Fi Power, tap Turn Wi-Fi On — then confirm the message that appears. Give it about half a minute; it picks its own channel and comes up by itself.

Give it 30 seconds The Wi-Fi picks its own channel — about half a minute, then it’s on.
The Wi-Fi page → Wi-Fi Power → Turn Wi-Fi On. A confirmation message appears first — that’s normal.

Good to know: the page warns you may briefly lose it while the Wi-Fi starts. Just reload the page after half a minute — nothing has gone wrong.

At home — before you go

2 Find your Wi-Fi’s name and password

On the same page, the Name & Password card shows your network’s name. The password is only ever shown there — tap Show next to “Current password” when you need it.

We never print the password in this guide, and your Shield never sends it anywhere. You can change both on the Name & Password card if you like.

At home — before you go

3 Join your phones and laptops — now, at home

On each iPhone, open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap WOMBATS under Other Networks, type the Wi-Fi password and tap Join. (Android: Settings → Network & internet → Internet → tap the same name.)

Settings → Wi-Fi → tap your Shield’s network → enter the password → Join. A blue tick appears when it’s joined.

Tip: once one family iPhone has joined, others nearby may offer Share Password automatically — one less thing to type.

At home — before you go

4 Do a practice run, then pack

With your phone on the WOMBATS network, open any webpage — if it loads, you’re ready (the Check now button at the end of this guide asks your Shield directly). Then shut the Shield down from the Admin page, unplug it, and pack three things: the Shield, its power supply, and one network cable.

🏠Anyone staying home? Your Shield runs your home network, so devices left at home will be offline while it travels with you. It all comes back the moment you plug it in again.

At your destination

5 Plug in at your stay

Run the cable from your Shield’s network port to a spare LAN port on the router or modem where you’re staying (not the port marked “Internet” or “WAN”). Plug in the power and wait for the light — starting up takes a couple of minutes.

Then join your phone to your Shield’s Wi-Fi, open the Wi-Fi page, and under Home & Travel tap ✈️ Travel. The Shield switches to getting its internet from the router you’re plugged into — your family’s devices stay on your own Shield Wi-Fi. (Back home you’ll tap 🏠 Home, the everyday setting.)

6 Your own Wi-Fi appears — devices join by themselves

A few minutes after power-on, WOMBATS is on the air and every phone and laptop you joined at home reconnects automatically. Same network name, same password, same protection as at home — nothing to set up.

Back home

7 Back home, plug it back exactly as it was

Reconnect the network cable to the same port on your home modem it came from, then plug the power back in. Open the Wi-Fi page and under Home & Travel tap 🏠 Home. Your Shield picks up where it left off — home network, filtering, files, everything — with nothing else to set up.

Home again: same cable, same port, power on — your home network is back within a couple of minutes.

Good to know: your travelling Wi-Fi stays on at home too, which is handy. If you’d rather turn it off, do it from the Wi-Fi page once you’re back — it only switches off when the Shield can see your home modem.

Did it work?

Check with your own eyes — it takes ten seconds:

1 · On your phone, open Settings → Wi-Fi — a tick should sit next to WOMBATS.
2 · Open any webpage — it should load through your Shield.
3 · Or tap Check now below and your Shield will answer for itself.

This works both at home (your practice run) and at your destination.

Worth knowing (the honest bits)

Hotel Wi-Fi with a login page won’t work If the internet where you’re staying makes you sign in on a webpage first (a “captive portal”), the Shield’s cable connection can’t get past that page. This setup suits stays with a plain router or an Ethernet wall socket — holiday homes, rentals, family visits.
Don’t switch the Shield’s Wi-Fi off while travelling As a safety rule, your Shield only turns its Wi-Fi off when it can see your home modem on the cable — so it can never strand you without a network on the road. If you try, it politely refuses. Leave it on and switch it off back home if you like.
Internet speed is whatever your stay provides Your Shield adds protection, not speed — pages load as fast as the accommodation’s connection allows.

If something’s off

Your Wi-Fi doesn’t appear at your stay Check the cable is firmly in a LAN port (not the one marked “Internet” or “WAN”), the power is in, and give it three minutes. Some wall sockets aren’t live — try another port on the router.
Devices connect but pages won’t load The place’s internet may need a browser login the Shield can’t do (see the honest bits above), or the router port isn’t giving out internet. Try a different LAN port — or ask your host which port is live.
A phone didn’t reconnect by itself Open Settings → Wi-Fi and tap WOMBATS yourself — if it asks for the password, it wasn’t joined at home. The password is on your Shield’s Wi-Fi page (tap Show).
Still nothing after a few minutes As a last resort, pull the Shield’s power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in — then give it a couple of minutes to start.
