The angle

The under-16 ban stops at the platform. The home is where it lands.

Australia's under-16 social media restrictions came into force on 10 December 2025. They apply to platforms. They do not reach the browser, the group chat, the game, the ad network, or the two hours after everyone else is asleep. Parents were handed a headline and left with the same house they had before. WOMBATS Shield is a piece of hardware for the part the law does not cover — the network the household actually runs on.

We take no position on the legislation itself. Our interest is narrower and more practical: whatever the law does, the home is still where it lands.

What WOMBATS Shield is

A small appliance, designed and engineered in Australia, that plugs into the home modem and filters ads, trackers, adult content, phishing and malware for every device on the network — the laptop, the console, the tablet, the visitor's phone. Parents can pause the internet, put it on a schedule and enforce SafeSearch.

It runs on the household's own network rather than in a company's cloud. There is no account to create, no app subscription, and no monthly fee. Three things the company will not move on, and which are the reason the product exists:

  • Buy once. No subscriptions.
  • Nothing about your home leaves your home. The Shield resolves web addresses itself rather than handing the household's browsing to a DNS company. The internet provider can still see the destinations, as it always could.
  • If we disappear, your Shield keeps working. No activation server, no cloud login. Filter lists update over the internet; control of the device does not depend on us existing.

Core and Edge are the same physical device — the difference is software. One photograph serves both, deliberately.

Boilerplate

Paste as-is.

WOMBATS Shield is a home network appliance, designed and engineered in Australia, that filters ads, trackers, adult content, phishing and malware for every device in a household, and gives parents pause, scheduling and SafeSearch controls. It runs on the home's own network rather than in a cloud: there is no account, no subscription and no monthly fee. Founding prices for the three models start at $424. WOMBATS Shield is a registered business name of Ausbotics Pty Ltd, based in North Sydney, NSW.

Founder

Khalid Rafique is an electronics engineer who wrote his first program in 1990 and has worked in electronics and software since the late 1980s. He built the first Shield for his own household — for his children, and for older relatives who were the target of scams — after concluding that the alternatives all required trusting somebody else's cloud with a picture of the home. He is based in North Sydney.

What it does not do

Included because it will save you a fact-check, and because we would rather you had it from us.

  • It does not read messages. Shield does not stop grooming or bullying inside a chat app, and we will never claim it does.
  • It is not a total block on determined circumvention. Nothing at the network layer is, and any vendor telling you otherwise is selling you something.
  • Follow-Me Filtering (Shield Vault) extends the home rules to a child's phone by connecting it back to the family's own Shield. The phone's owner can switch that connection off; the Shield shows when each phone last connected. That trade is deliberate — a lock a teenager can't turn off is one they'll route around. If the home internet is down, a phone set to always-protected has no internet until it reconnects. The same connection also carries Back to Shield: the owner's phone or laptop reaching the Shield's dashboard and the family's files from away, at the home internet's upload speed.
  • Per-device filtering, per-device SafeSearch and per-device app blocking are Shield Edge and Shield Vault features. On Shield Core those controls apply to the whole network at once. Pausing a device and setting its internet schedule work on every model.
  • Setup asks for the modem's admin login — the one on the modem's sticker. It is usually a couple of minutes, but it is not nothing.
  • A technically confident buyer can build the DNS filtering layer themselves for around $100. Shield is the version that sets up the protection for you, stays maintained, and comes with a person to message.
