Friday night, the family Mac runs its first full Time Machine backup onto Vault's built-in drive. Saturday morning, you accidentally delete a folder of photos and recover them from the recycle bin a minute later. Sunday, you pack up for a week away. Shield Vault comes with you, joins the hotel Wi‑Fi, and broadcasts a calm filtered Wi‑Fi network for the family. None of this needs a cloud account.
What Shield Vault adds
A built-in drive you can encrypt
A 256 GB SSD on board, with encryption switched on when you first set up the drive — it needs a passphrase and a recovery key only you hold, so we can't do it for you. Once it's on, the auto-unlock key is bound to the device's own silicon, independent of your passphrase and recovery key.
Backups from every computer in the house
Vault is a backup drive for any computer, Windows included, and a calm, local Time Machine target for the Macs. Backups stay on your network and never leave the property.
Recycle bin
When something is accidentally deleted, the recycle bin keeps a copy. A small thing that saves a bad day.
Travel Wi-Fi — no cable needed
Vault joins the hotel or Airbnb Wi-Fi — even networks with a login page — and broadcasts your own calm, filtered Wi-Fi for your devices.
Follow-Me Filtering
Your kids' phones stay behind your rules away from home — on mobile data, at school, at a friend's place. Each phone connects back to your own Shield through a free app, set up by scanning a code. No accounts, and no cloud doing the filtering — that still happens at home, on your device. The phone's owner can switch it off, and it depends on your home internet.
Back to Shield — your dashboard and files, from away
The same free app that carries Follow-Me brings a phone or a laptop back onto your home network, so things work the way they do at home: open the Shield dashboard in a browser to pause a device or change a rule, and open, copy and save the family's files on Vault's drive. It runs at your home internet's upload speed: copying files is fine, editing a document live over the connection is slow, and playing video from away isn't supported yet.

The 256 GB SSD is in the price. Larger drives are paid upgrades, quoted at fulfilment: choose the size, we confirm size and price by email, then build to spec — by hand during the founding batch.

Vault is the complete Shield. As well as the features above, it does everything Shield Core and Shield Edge do:
- Ads, trackers, adult content and phishing blocked for every device on your network
- SafeSearch and app blocking for the whole house — TikTok, Instagram and 130+ apps by name, main route and backup routes
- Pause and bedtime hours per device
- A dashboard that runs on the Shield, on your network — no account, no cloud login
- Filtering, SafeSearch and app blocking per device — different rules for each child, app schedules among them
- File sharing across the household, and a media library your TVs can play (SMB, Jellyfin, DLNA)
Don't need the built-in drive, cable-free travel Wi-Fi or Follow-Me? Shield Edge has the per-child rules and the media library; Shield Core filters the whole house with one set of rules.
Follow-Me, honestly
- The phone's owner can switch the connection off in the app — and your Shield shows when each phone last connected, so you'll know. A dedicated WOMBATS app that makes switching off harder is planned.
- If your home internet or Shield is offline, a phone set to always-protected has no internet until it reconnects.
- Back to Shield: it runs at your home internet's upload speed: copying files is fine, editing a document live over the connection is slow, and playing video from away isn't supported yet. For a document, copy it down, work, copy it back.
- Most phones connect straight back to your Shield. If your internet connection has no public IP address (Starlink, many 5G and mobile broadband plans, hotel Wi-Fi), the phone connects through our relay in Australia instead — it only routes the connection, it's end-to-end encrypted, it can see a phone's IP address and when it is connected (which we don't log), and there's no subscription.
Capacity guidance
Shield Vault is comfortable with 15–25 browsing devices, around 3 combined direct‑play streams, 1–2 Time Machine backups, 2 SMB file transfers and 15–25 connected Wi‑Fi AP devices at the same time. These are comfort targets, not benchmark maxima, first full Time Machine backups should be staggered, and ideally done in home mode rather than over the Vault Wi‑Fi AP.
